While the Metal Gear feel is there thanks to the perspective, attention to detail, and emphasis on cinematics, one never actually has to skulk through shadows, avoid detection, and the like. Many have described Vagrant Story as "Medieval Gear Solid," a comparison that both is correct and not correct. What are Sydney's intentions, and how does Ashley play into his master plan? As with Final Fantasy Tactics, which was developed by the same team, the lines between good and evil are endlessly blurred and the story is complex and twisted. After a chance encounter with the heartless leader of the Mullenkamp Cult, Sydney Losstarot, Ashley finds himself in a life-or-death game of cat and mouse amidst a deeper plot larger than the two of them. Caught in the middle is Ashley Riot, an agent for the Valendia Knights of Peace's elite Riskbreaker unit. Despite a few interface and complexity issues, Vagrant Story is a rare and nearly perfected game.Ī brutal battle wages between the Knights of the Crimson Blade and the Mullenkamp Cult in the city of Lea Monde.

A melange of the action, adventure and RPG genres, Square has truly beaten all odds and produced an engaging, seamless epic unlike any other.

The PS3 store inevitably will close down sooner or later, and unless Square provides a remake or rerelease, the only way to play Vagrant Story will be to hunt down a potentially expensive copy on eBay.Let's just get it out of the way - Vagrant Story is a ground-breaking game. Vagrant Story has never been updated or remade since its original release, and though it's available as a PS1 classic on PS3, there have been reports that PS3 and Vita games are becoming unplayable. At the very least, versions of the other Ivalice games are already available on modern consoles or mobile devices. Modern updates are only half the issue, however. A remake for Vagrant Story with new graphics and a little hand-holding could help reestablish it as one of Square Enix's best properties. So far, Tactics Ogre Reborn appears to be accessible for newcomers without diluting the original's mechanics. A remake has a lot to offer, as the same complexity can also make it difficult for new players looking to experience the original. With Matsuno teasing that a Vagrant Story 2 could be in development, now is the perfect time for a remake or remaster.Īs an old-fashioned action RPG, Vagrant Story's complex and customizable combat would appeal to SRPG fans while also feeling fresh in Square's crowded release schedule. Combat is balanced between chaining attacks to deal extensive damage, and a Risk factor that functions similarly to fatigue and negatively impacts Ashley's abilities. While modern action RPGs can sometimes end up repetitive or button-mashy, Vagrant Story's combat retains the sophistication that defines the combat of all the Ivalice games.

Though it takes place in the same world as Tactics, Vagrant Story is an action RPG. After the other Direct reveals, the Switch is starting to feel like the new home of SRPGs and farming sims. Just from Square Enix, Triangle Strategy released earlier this year, The Diofield Chronicle is releasing this month, and Square Enix's Nintendo Direct announcements confirmed remakes of the first three Front Mission games. Strategy games in general are seeing a surge with promising new titles like Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.

And it would be a welcome return, if Square Enix wasn't currently flooding the market with strategy RPGs. That being the case, the most obvious candidate to follow Tactics Ogre: Reborn in the remake factory would be Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics Ogre is the spiritual predecessor to Final Fantasy Tactics, which itself is considered one of the best strategy RPGs ever made and a staple FF entry.
